a new year’s day walk with my love in the magnolia jacket they made me!
Before I get into today’s newsletter - I have two questions for you.
The first is this poll:
And the second: will you take thirty seconds to submit a question or topic you’d like me to write about in this newsletter? I’d love for this newsletter to feel collaborative and conversational, where we find that yummy intersection of what I want to write about and what you want to hear about.
Thank you! Now onto today’s newsletter!
A few years ago, as part of the creative support work I was more focused on back then, I created a free mini creative reset.
Any time is a great time to (re)connect with your creativity, but I’m imagining some of y’all have some creative intentions for the new year. (I’d love to hear them in the comments - mine are mainly to finish at least the first draft of my novel and to continue my quilting practice).
So it feels like an appropriate time to send out some prompts from that years-ago creative reset, in case you feel like diving into them.
I’d also like to add: if you’re feeling disconnected from your creativity, blocked, stuck — it’s okay! There’s nothing wrong with that. I really believe creativity is something that’s meant to ebb and flow, just like pretty much everything else.
(And, even when we’re not doing things we deem creative like writing the book or making the drawing - being a human is so creative! Meandering walks, doing things that inspire us, dreaming up new ways of being in relationship, cooking, the list goes on. So many things we don’t usually think of that way can be creative.)
To me, the goal isn’t to never feel disconnected or blocked or “uncreative” or however you want to think of it — but to find some flow between everything. Just like how our nervous systems are meant to stretch through all their states, so too is our creativity.
Here are a few prompts for you to explore (write to them, speak your thoughts out loud, meditate on them, doodle to them…whatever works!):
What makes me feel disconnected from my creativity?
I don’t feel creative because…
How does disconnection from creativity feel in my body?
What structures do I have in my life (and/or do I want to build in my life) to support my creativity?
What makes me feel creative?
What inspires me?
What makes me feel alive?
How does creativity feel in my body?
What do I feel excited or curious about creating this year? (Think: modalities to explore, colors to play with, specific or general project ideas, etc!)
I hope these prompts support and I’m wishing you all lots of care and creative magic this year.
This month’s paid joy notes will include some more prompts around play as a support for creativity. Subscribe below for $5/month to access it + an archive of writings on creativity, healing, aliveness, beauty, grief, and joy.
With care,
Eryn
